Current Hospital aims |
|
| 3. To develop the hospital as a teaching and training centre for mental disorders 4. To facilitate research in the field of mental health Vision and strategy Our desire is to elevate this single national specialized hospital on mental health to the state of "National Institute of Mental Health". It will become a centre of excellence for service provision, education and research. It should develop into the focal point of the Nepalese Government's Ministry of Health's mental health strategy assisting in the formulation of health policies and programmes, managing resources & manpower, implementation and overall mental health coordination. Problems within the Hospital As with any organisation there are currently a number of problems at the Mental Hospital and reducing these is a key aim. Problems exist in the following categories: Manpower/Human resources problems + the number of psychiatrists is currently inadequate- there are 3 psychiatrists including the director. + within the nursing body there is a lack of trained psychiatric nurses + there is a need for more specialist staff including clinincal psychologists, an EEG technican, an occupational therapist, an anaesethist for modified ECT Probelms with the Infrastructure + the newly built indoor complex has multiple problems including poor water supply system & poor drainage system + in order for the indoor complex to be satisfactorily upgraded it needs 2 new stories. This would allow both additional beds and subspecia branches of the hospital - e.g. an alcohol and addiction unit, child & adolescent unit, geriatric unit + an emergency light system is needed + better facilities are needed for patients' attendants and guardians, including lodging & a kitchen area. + the OPD complex/building is not fit for purpose - it is poorly built and requires continual maintenance as well as being an unscientific environment. + the hospital lacks a pharmacy and a canteen + there is a lack of space for academic purposes, for the training of different levels of health personnel including interns, post-graduate residents and non-psychic medical officers. Problems with Services + there is a lack of emergency services + methadone replacement therapy does not currently exist + community psychiatry has not been developed + tele-medecine has not been deployed in the mental heath field |
